The Mayfield School District’s Wall of Dedication welcomed its two newest members during a ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 13 in the high school auditorium. Donna Ellithorpe and the late Ken Davison both had plaques describing their contributions to the district added to the Wall. Davison joined his son, Kenneth Edward Davison, to make them the only father-son tandem on the wall.
“They are both outstanding selections,” said Board of Education President Bob Suits. “A lot of people don’t realize there were two Ken Davisons. The committee felt like Ken and Donna were the two strongest candidates this year.
“Donna did so much for the district and was so loved. And Ken was a pioneer of the custodians and bus drivers.”
Davison worked as Mayfield Central School’s first custodian when it opened in 1939. Two years later, he became one of the district’s bus drivers and continued in that position for 13 years. He was also a member of the Mayfield Fire Department for 26 years, including five years as its chief. Davison served as the leader of the “Sod Busters” 4-H club for 10 years and was a member of the Mayfield Methodist Church, serving on various committees. “Most importantly, he loved children and was there to help before anyone could even ask for help,” it says on his plaque.
Ellithorpe worked as a secretary for four district superintendents from 1974 to 1995. Her plaque says she was instrumental in organizing both the business and superintendent’s offices and was always gracious to everyone who walked through the office doors. In 1968, she was hired at MCS as one of the first two full-time teacher aides. She also has the distinction of being the first female bus drive of a 60-passenger bus in Mayfield.
“Donna loved Mayfield and Mayfield loved her,” says her plaque. “More than once she said to her husband, ‘Tink,’ ‘…And they pay me to do a job I absolutely love…imagine that!’”
The Wall of Dedication honors people who have graduated from Mayfield, worked or volunteered in the district, or are members of the Mayfield community who have had a positive impact on area children.
