leaf bullet Library receives $500 book grant

October 20, 2010

Who would win a battle between the characters from Twilight and Harry Potter?

Thanks to a $500 book grant from Wal-Mart, students at Mayfield Jr./Sr. High School might be answering that question soon enough. That is, if the newly created book club decides to read one of those titles again.

With the grant money, library media specialist Megan Hallenbeck plans to buy six new books (about 10 copies of each) that students wouldn’t normally read in the classroom. After the members read a book, they’ll discuss it over snacks.

Mrs. Hallenbeck said the money is enough to sustain the club for about a year.

“We had a book club about two years ago, but we couldn’t keep it up because we couldn’t get the number of copies we need for the books the kids wanted to read,” Mrs. Hallenbeck said. “It’s fun for them to read a book that’s not tied to a class.”

Mrs. Hallenbeck applied for the community grant last year by writing a letter. She had to prove she intended to use the money for her local community or school. When she received a check, she knew exactly what to do with it.

“Most kids love to read, they just need to find that one book that breaks it all open like the Twilight or Harry Potter series,” she said.
