leaf bullet Elementary School puts grant to good use

October 26, 2010

Imagine a place at Mayfield Elementary School where parents can help their children read or where they can learn how to manage difficult behavior. Thanks to a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart, that place will now become a reality.

With the grant and some district money, the school plans to create a parent resource room and also purchase books to help grow its guided reading program.

In the resource room, Principal Nicholas Criscone plans to feature a computer with Internet access where parents can access educationally related Web sites that the district subscribes to. He'll also feature a television and a DVD player where parents can watch videos on managing difficult behavior in their homes. The room will also have print material on child development, school related topics, and life issues that many families may be dealing with.

“This represents a great partnership between this school, community and the business world,” Mr. Criscone said.

“We are directly using the money to help and support our community members and their children. We want parents and our students to have access to as much material as they can, and this is with special thanks to Wal-Mart!"
