Parents, teachers, and classmates all shouted words of encouragement to
the more than 85 Mayfield elementary students who raced around an almost
one-mile course during the school’s annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 10. The
weather reached into the low ‘50s as students raced under bright blue
skies.
Even as the last out-of-breath runners crossed the fini
sh
line, classmates patted them on the back and gave them high-fives.
Students from the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades participated in the race and the top finisher amongst boys and girls earned a shiny trophy. No child who ran though left empty-handed, as each received a ribbon or another prize.
The long-standing tradition at Mayfield of holding the Turkey Trot has changed a bit over the years (just like the course) but physical education teachers Brian More and Hillary Cool said the race encourages health and wellness.
“It really promotes running and fitness activities,” Mrs. Cool said. “There were even a few kids who came to practice so that means the message of being fit is definitely stretching into the home.”
Mr. Moore said they try to change the course yearly so the kids experience something new and exciting.
“We try to make the race open to everyone,” he said. “Kids really give it their all.”
