To continue Mayfield High School’s Class of 2011 initiative to foster pride and respect in the community, the Mayfield Key Club paired with seniors from the Participation in Government class to give away 17 Thanksgiving baskets to local families.
After the Key Club gave $300 to Jennifer Wasserstrom’s class, her students created a budget and shopped for all the items essential for Thanksgiving dinner. The families picked-up their baskets on Monday, Nov. 22.
Mrs. Wasserstrom said the program gave students a chance to do something positive for the local community while also teaching an essential lesson.
“High school kids may not have a concept of how expensive food is, so to go out and shop and buy food for a family is an eye-opening experience,” she said. “The kids take a lot of pride in creating their baskets.
“One of the most important parts of being a citizen is learning how to do community service, because we want to do things that benefit out community as much as possible.”
