Last year, Mayfield Elementary School students raised about $6,500
during the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program.
This year, they surpassed that number, raising about $8,500.
Students from every grade moved between eight “jumping stations” in the
elementary gymnasium Thursday, Jan. 27, as they skipped rope, danced,
and participated in potato sack races. The event continued Friday and
culminated with students turning principal Nicholas Crisone and
assistant principal Abbey North into ice cream sundaes.
On Thursday, Teachers and 10 volunteers from Mayfield Jr. /Sr. High
School helped students skip rope (some even got in on the act) and
learned a short choreographed dance.
“Today was a great success,” said physical education teacher Brian
Moore. “There are students in Mayfield who have had heart surgeries and
two who have had surgery multiple times, so this is something that hits
home.”
Mr.
Moore said most schools raise about $2,000, so Mayfield set the bar
high. He said most of the 550 students at the elementary were involved.
“They not only raised money, but they got a lot of exercise today,” he
said.
Mrs. North skipped rope with the students throughout the day Thursday
and praised the event as a success.
“This is something I always wanted to do here. My mother, who’s a
physical education teacher, gave me this idea,” Mrs. North said.
“Everyone really came together, including our volunteers, staff and
students to make this event a huge success.”
