Music classes have come a long way since the days where students learned about the history of Johann Sebastian Bach or sang along to “Seventy-six Trombones.”

These days, students at Mayfield Jr. /Sr. High School are utilizing computer software such as Finale and GarageBand that allow them to compose, arrange, play, or print music.

During a recent project, students Nicholas Anker’s Music Technology class used GarageBand, an Apple software application, to complete an assignment. GarageBand is like a music studio where students can play a keyboard connected to the computer to record music. The program can also record other instruments from guitar to the drums.

Mr. Anker said the programs reinforce note reading and rhythm skills and teach students skills that he learned in graduate school.

“The kids really like the program. They come in here during free periods and write their own music. They just start composing and arranging it,” Mr. Anker said. “The software is like a professional studio right here. They can record audio, cut it, or remix it. There are no limits.”

Junior Matt Montgomery said he enjoys working with instruments and looks forward to the class.

“It’s all about hands-on experience,” he said. “We’re not sitting at a desk, we’re doing stuff.”

Sophomore Tommy McClellan said he loves music and has learned “a lot” by taking the class.

“I really like the way I get to use music and make songs. I’ve learned how to operate all this software,” he said.

Mr. Anker not only uses the software to teach, but he also makes CDs for choir rehearsals. The software allows him to record each individual part.

“I really want to help them utilize and explore technology,” Mr. Anker said. “Then, they can express whatever they want musically.”
