The International Paper Foundation has awarded a $2,164 grant to Mayfield Elemenatary School for its “Reading Our Way into Outer Space” initiative.
An estimated 80 students in grades K-3 who are not reading at grade level and need extra support will benefit from this program. Participants will read about outer space from the 178 newly purchased leveled readers. These readers include: “The Earth, Asteroids and Comets,” “The Solar System,” “National Geographic Kids Meteors,” “Life on Mars” and “The Amazing Planet Earth.”
Students will visit the Museum of Science and Innovation (miSci) in Schenectady, NY to visit a planetarium.
Upon return to the classroom, students will continue read and write about the real-world science experience to advance their literacy skills.
The readers will cost an estimated $1,284 and the visit to the museum will cost an estimated $880.
