The Mayfield Jr/Sr High School held its first quarter Character Assembly on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Quarterly assemblies are held to celebrate students who have consistently displayed positive character traits such as accountability, enthusiasm, excellence in work, productivity, good behavior, and work ethic. The students who were honored have led by example and are role models for their peers.

The assembly featured special guest speaker Curt Schreiner. Schreiner is a retired Army National Guard and three time winter Olympic biathlete. He discussed his journey throughout the 1988, 1992 and 1994 Olympics, and the hard work and determination it takes to participate in that level of competition. While his time as an Olympic biathlete was met with both successes and failures, he remained dedicated to his sport and continued to pursue his dreams.
After the Olympics, Schreiner joined the Army National Guard and participated in their sports program, an opportunity that allowed him to continue his athletic career while serving his country. In his discussion to students, Schreiner touched upon his setbacks, the importance of seizing opportunities when they are presented, and his desire to persevere.
Schreiner’s most recent hurdle has been being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. While his current health condition keeps him from being active in the sport he loves, he’s grateful he took advantage of the time he had.
“I’m so glad I was able to accomplish the things I did while I was able to,” said Schreiner. “I have no regrets, I wouldn’t do anything differently.”
The Character Assembly also recognized students for their good attendance and commitment to dependability.
