Elementary student athletes with unique challenges participated in Mayfield’s inaugural Unified Track Meet on Wednesday, May 27. The event was aimed at providing students with an opportunity to showcase their abilities and build confidence through shared success.
Students in grades 3-8 were invited to partner with high school students to participate together in track and field events, fostering positive peer connections and building friendships. The meet featured seven different events designed to highlight individual strengths, encourage personal achievement, and celebrate effort and perseverance in a supportive environment.

Junior Alivia Kastberg was the driving force behind this event, creating and organizing everything from scratch – grouping the athletes, providing individual certificates, guiding and supporting her peers, and providing donated shirts from ‘Dacks Clothing.
“This day was about giving these students an opportunity to participate in athletics in a way they are comfortable with,” said Alivia. ”I wanted a day that was just about them. Everyone deserves a moment to shine.”
The spirit of the meet created an atmosphere of encouragement, respect, and community while allowing these student athletes to take center stage and be recognized for their accomplishments and unique abilities.
Special education teacher Kris Goodemote and physical education teacher Brynn Hlozansky noted Alivia’s hard work and dedication to making this day a good experience for everyone.
“It was an honor working with Alivia on this project. The day was a huge success from start to finish, not only providing a moving experience for the athletes, but also building unexpected, special connections between the athletes and their high school partners.”
