Homeschooling Process & Guidelines

Step 1: Verify District Residency

Families residing within the Mayfield Central School District who intend to homeschool must fill out and submit the Registration Form and be able to establish or verify district residency.

Parents/guardians will provide the following to the district office:

  • Two proofs of residency (mortgage/lease agreement, utility/fuel bill, National Grid, or Spectrum bill)
  • Parent/guardian driver’s license reflecting the current district address (an official DMV change-of-address sticker is accepted)
  • Student’s birth certificate

Step 2: Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI)

(If your child is already registered/verified as a resident in Mayfield, you may skip to Step 2)

Submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to either HFM BOCES or the Mayfield School District:

Letters of Intent are due annually by July 1 for the upcoming school year, or within 14 days of moving into the district/deciding to homeschool during the school year.

Step 3: Program Overview & NYS Compliance Materials

Once the LOI is received and processed, BOCES will send an introductory email outlining New York State homeschooling regulations, key compliance timelines, and optional model forms (such as the IHIP template).

Step 4: Review and Confirmation

Submitted paperwork is reviewed by BOCES for state compliance. Families will receive an acknowledgment letter confirming compliance or outlining any additional documentation needed to finalize the homeschool plan.
