Mayfield Central School District senior Gavin Rowback has recently received two awards from the College Board National Recognition Program – the Rural and Small Town Recognition Award and the School Recognition Award.
The Rural and Small Town Recognition Award and School Recognition Award celebrate students who demonstrate academic excellence within their school community. To qualify, a student must score among the top 10% of their high school’s test takers on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 and earn a 3+ or higher on two or more distinct AP exams by 10th grade.

Rowback is a conscientious and high-performing student who is no stranger to academic achievement. He is a current member of the National Honor Society and in 2024 he earned the University of Rochester Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology Award. Rowback is active in extracurricular activities and is a member of MasterMinds, Brainstorm, Coding Club, Gaming Club and Drama Stage Crew.
A fan of all things to do with technology and computers, Rowback is also a current student in HFM Career & Technical Education’s Cybersecurity Program. At CTE he had continued to excel academically, gaining confidence in his skills, and broadening his vision of what a future in information technology looks like. After graduating he hopes to attend Hartwick College and major in Cybersecurity and Computer Science.
Mayfield Jr/Sr High School principal Josh Santarcangelo remarked on Rowback’s pleasant demeanor and commitment to his academics.
“Gavin is an amazing student. He is kind, polite, and challenges himself with the courses he takes,” said Santarcangelo. “He is dedicated to his program at CTE, as well as academically here in Mayfield. The future looks bright for this young man and we wish him well.”
