On September 29, 2016 water samples were taken from all drinking fountains, room sink faucets and kitchen sink faucets at the Mayfield Junior/Senior High School. The samples were tested for lead by JH Consulting Group and the results were received by the district on October 28, 2016. Read the high school/junior high school report.
No drinking fountains were reported above the state’s maximum safe allowable level of 0.015 milligrams per liter/parts per billion (ppb).
Of the 64 total samples collected and tested, twelve (12) samples tested above the lead level threshold of 15 parts per billion allowed by New York State. All twelve that exceeded the threshold were from sink faucets and the valves to all twelve have consequently been turned off or a sign is in place directing all individuals not to consume the water. Assistant Principal Matt Lewis will coordinate with teachers whose sink faucets were turned off to discuss an action plan for returning them to service.
The district’s Facilities Committee (Board Members Kevin Capobianco and Aaron Flynn, along with Rick Hoose, Matt Lewis and yours truly) met with Fulton County Public Health Department director Dr. Gelman regarding lead toxicity. Dr. Gelman shared, “Most often, children get lead poisoning from breathing in or swallowing dust from old lead paint that gets on floors and windowsills, hands and toys. Lead can also be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy. Adults can also get lead poisoning, especially through contact with lead in certain jobs or hobbies or when disturbing lead paint through renovation or remodeling activities.

Lead tests show high levels in 13 out of 83 water locations at the elementary school; 4 out of 10 at bus garage tested above state level; all valves shut off

On September 22, 2016 water samples were taken from all drinking fountains, room sink faucets and kitchen faucets at the Mayfield Elementary School. The samples were tested for lead by JH Consulting Group and the results were received by the district on October 11, 2016.
Of the 83 total samples collected and tested, 13 samples tested above the lead levels of 15 parts per billion allowed by New York State. Seven were from sink faucets and the six from fountains are either not functioning or are in rooms not accessed by students. All water valves in question were shot off. Two faucets on one sink in the kitchen tested at 16 parts per billion. The district has ordered a filter to be installed on those faucets prior to placing the sink back in operation.
Additionally, 10 samples were collected in the bus garage where four tested above the threshold. The district has either turned off the valves or posted a sign directing all individuals not to consume the water (the water is safe for hand washing).

School district staff today collected 93 water samples – from drinking fountains, sinks and other faucets – to be sent to a lab near Loudonville, north of Albany, for lead testing.
The samples were taken from the elementary school, both bus garages and the concession stand. Additional samples will be taken in the coming weeks from the junior high school/high school building.
The testing is being done by JAH Consulting in Newtonville.
As soon as the results are completed, they will be posted to the district website.
