The Mayfield Athletic Department hosted a Grand Opening of its newly renovated gymnasium floor on Thursday, Dec. 7. The previously dedicated Rovito Gymnasium serves as a hub for physical education and athletic programming and the new floor is expected to enhance students’ experiences there for years to come.
The Mayfield gymnasium first opened its doors on December 4, 1981 after breaking ground 16 months before. The new facility significantly improved the athletic programming offered at Mayfield and has served countless students, coaches, teams, games and events over the years.
In 2021, the gym was renamed the Rovito Gymnasium in honor of longtime physical education teachers, Kevin and Eileen Rovito. For nearly 40 years, the Rovitos cultivated a love of physical activity, competition and sportsmanship. They took time to work with every student that came through their doors, creating a physical education program that was inclusive, welcoming and supportive.
The Rovitos’ legacy lives on in the gymnasium and the dedication serves as a reminder to future athletes, parents, and coaches of their enthusiasm and commitment to the district.
The Grand Opening ceremony was held between the JV and Varsity girls basketball games and welcomed a large crowd from the school community. Athletic Director Jon Caraco greeted the audience, thanking them for attending and again recognizing the impact the Rovitos had on Mayfield school.
“Tonight, in the Rovito Gymnasium, we officially name the floor after Kevin and Eileen Rovito. It is a fitting tribute to the legacy the Rovitos left in Mayfield. Over the years, their students always knew they had two people cheering for them, believing in them and inspiring them to be better.”
A ribbon cutting by Eileen Rovito, and official unveiling of the new floor followed. The crowd honored Eileen and the late Kevin Rovito with a standing ovation.
The new gym floor was made possible by the voter approved 2023-24 Capital Outlay Project and insurance proceeds for water damage in 2021. Mayfield CSD is thrilled to welcome its students and school community back to the Rovito Gymnasium.
