Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable environment where learning is fun. Our philosophy is that young children learn best through play and exploration.
THE PRE-K DAY
- Arrival and Free Play
- Circle Time: calendar, days of the week, weather, daily jobs, pre-reading instruction, math concepts, show and tell, fingerplays
- Snack: socialization, manners, independence
- Story: attentive listening, remembering details, answering questions, listening for pleasure
- Learning Centers
- Academic: colors, shapes, counting, numbers, letters, rhyming, sequencing, patterns, pre-writing, problem-solving, size concepts, expressive and receptive language skills, etc.
- Art: fine motor development, creativity, following directions, use of art materials, cutting, pre-writing, etc.
- Fine Motor: puzzles, stringing beads, lacing, peg boards, manipulation of small objects, building toys, cutting, pre-writing, etc.
- Play/Socialization Centers: interactive play, sharing, taking turns, cooperation, imagination, problem solving and language development
- Sensory Center: sensory exploration through the use of play dough, sand, water, etc.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
Our school stresses character education by encouraging good social behavior and citizenship. In kindergarten, we expect children to:
- Use good manners
- Share
- Show respect for self and others
- Demonstrate good listening skills
- Learn to develop good work habits individually and as a group and
- Of course, follow the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
FIRST GRADE
The first grade team is dedicated to building and nurturing a strong foundation between home, school and the community. Our goal is to differentiate instruction in order to meet the needs of each individual.
HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Students will carry homework folders/MOOSE Notebooks to and from school each day. These folders will have a “To Do” side and a “Finished” side. Please check your child’s folder every day.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
- Agendas must be checked and signed daily. Teachers will respond to any communication within two days.
- Please call or email your child’s teacher with any immediate concerns. To provide uninterrupted instruction, the best time to call is 12:40-1:05 p.m.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
- Five week reports will be sent home to be signed and returned.
- Notes to parents will be written in or attached to agenda and can serve as a daily means of communication.
- Phone calls or conferences will be scheduled as needed.

Our reading staff provides reading instruction and strategies to educate students for academic success.
READING TIPS
- Read together every day. Just 15 minutes a day makes a difference!
- Go to the library. The Mayfield Community Library, located at the high school, is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday evenings, 5-8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon.
- Participate in Read 25.
- Keep a journal. Write about daily activities and favorite things.
- Play games like Scrabble and Boggle on rainy days.
